Train aficionados may lament the lack of commuter and high-speed rail in the United States, but freight still reigns out here and is largely behind keeping our economy moving. Shipping companies are amongst the most successful and powerful companies in the United States and have significant impact on the environment and our society. Now many of them are corporate social responsibility (CSR) leaders.
To that end, Omaha-based Union Pacific released its 2010 sustainability and citizen report. Some highlights include:
- Union Pacific improved its energy efficiency by 3 percent, saving more than 27 million gallons of diesel fuel compared to 2009.
- The company announced a fuel consumption rate reduction goal of 1 percent annually from 2011 to 2015, as measured on a gross-ton mile basis. Attaining this goal would represent a 23 percent fuel-efficiency improvement since 2000. (click above left to expand the picture of one of UP's "green" locomotives)
- Union Pacific donated more than $14 million and supported more than 2,500 nonprofits through a combination of Union Pacific Foundation, matching gifts and corporate contributions.
