The Quest for The Air Powered Car

While electric vehicles (EVs) are improving in design, range, and performance, clean transportation mavens hold out hope that automobiles powered by alternative sources of fuel will gain traction.  Dreams of hydrogen cars have been the holy grail for politicians.  Solar cars are a fun concept.  And for decades cars running on air, or compressed air, have intrigued entrepreneurs and investors.

Tata is one company that has tried to develop air cars powered by compressed air.  The One Cat (pictured, click to expand) and the latest, the Mini Cat, have made test runs and boast promise.  But as Triple Pundit’s Steve Puma explains, the concept, while compelling on the drawing board, is a challenge in practice.  Factors from their engine’s efficiency to questions whether they are truly emissions free have prevented these cars from ever going to market.  Compressed air cars have a ways to go.
