Parkman Triangle, an example of urban acupuncture in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, is thriving one year after LA City Council President Eric Garcetti anchored the ribbon cutting in August last year.
For several months, the gigantic Tinker Toy project gone wrong has vexed neighbors, torn between dumping it or shrugging their shoulders as they walk or drive by it.
Los Angeles is not intuitively the most bike-friendly city, but there are plenty of workarounds. With my Altima spending the night at the mechanic’s in Echo Park, I had to bike to Beverly Hills for a networking event.
It has been a year since work on Parkman Triangle was completed, and now the micro-park is thriving. Last October, NBC 4 interviewed Ara Babaian about the work that went into this Silver Lake street corner, and this morning it make NBC 4’s segment on cool local neighborhoods.
Embracing a small and quiet courtyard on the east side of Los Angeles’ Sunset Boulevard, Spice Station’s shelves include jars full of merlot salt from France, perky cinnamon from southeast Asia, and dried leek flakes that would make any potato soup pop with joy.
About a year ago we started work on Parkman Triangle, a thin strip of land on Parkman Avenue and Silver Lake Boulevard south of Sunset Boulevard. The Los Angeles area is now crammed with farmers markets, perhaps as many as 300 that occur somewhere every day of the week. A few bad apples are making false claims about their produce. Should they be fined, suspended, or sprayed?
The brief on Parkman Triangle will be part of series that explores various Los Angeles neighborhoods, with the goal to show locals and visitors spots in LA that merit a visit—going beyond the standards like Universal Studios, Hollywood and the Grove. Stay tuned in October!
After two years of applications, planning, negotiating, and working, Parkman Triangle is finally open. You can now grab a cafecito at Cafe Tropical and enjoy it with a guava cheese pie on one of the rocks (just throw away your trash, of course!).
