What Green Economy?
Yesterday, as I walked up Pico Boulevard to the Los Angeles Convention Center, a sense of doom overcame me as I saw the crowds outside the entrance on Figueroa Street.Drat, I thought. It's 10:20, it started at 10, and I won't get into the Go Green Expo. The place is mobbed, so "green" really is the rage! There will be thousands of people accosting the exhibit hall for a handful of job openings--just like what we see in the newspapers when a new hotel opens and 3000 folks queue up for 100 jobs.
I could not believe all the tension in the air. People really looked down and out. It seemed half of them were smoking cigarettes. I saw many with determined looks on their faces. It seemed that most were with their families. Such is life in LA at a time when employment is over 12%.
Will I ever get in, I thought, as I approached the glass and steel entrance.
I’m a Vegan Hair Salon, and I’m Taking Over.
I've seen enough. Hand me the keys. I'm taking ooh-vah. - Tabatha Coffey, star of Bravo's hit reality series, Tabatha's Salon Takeover, to another clueless owner as she is gob-smacked, once again, by a poorly-run hair salon . . .I know there are far more serious issues going on right now, such as the climate change conference in Copenhagen, but I figure COP15 has enough media buzz--not to mention the discussion of all the private jets and limousines that are hauling all the politicians and potentates to and around a Scandinavian city . . . in winter.
Which is why it may seem ridiculous that I am bringing up Tabatha's Salon Takeover (more...)
Green Job Fairs: Beware of the Scams
Recently I went to a Green Jobs Fair sponsored by the Los Angeles Community College District. I figured it would be a good opportunity to network and meet companies; after all, few people actually get a job through such an event, so I went for the heck of it, with zero expectations. Unfortunately, my expectations were way too high. I left after 15 minutes, and felt terrible for telling a friend of mine, a recent USC grad who’s trying to land a job in the green tech sector, about this joke of an event. (more...)
Local-Washing?
You've probably heard of the term "greenwashing": slapping labels such as organic, natural, sustainable, free range, etc., which leads us to think this product is good for us. It's easy to fall into the trap, and well, as consumer trends change, businesses try to adapt. But now it appears your favorite companies are going to convince us that entering their stores, eating at their restaurants, or buying their products are helping you to sustain your local economy. I suppose this would be . . . "local-washing"? (more...)Buy used. Reuse. Use again. Repeat.
We are inundated with "green" products everywhere, from local shops to the web. Friends have been sending me all kinds of web sites that showcase green products for review. I've seen "green" underwear, green dog accessories, green kitchen gadgets--my favorite is the plastic wishbone that vegetarians can snap instead of killing a chicken and snapping the real thing. To me, that's not very green. Rather gauche, I think. All the companies slap on labels such as "eco-friendly" and "natural." I call it greenwashing. (more...)So should we go for Conventional-ganic?
Today a UK study questioning the nutritional value of organic food made the newswires, and of course, sparked debate on the radio waves. The study involved parsing through 50 years of research papers, zoomed in on 162 papers that compared the nutritional value of organic and conventional foods, and concluded, “the Bush administration had it right all along!” (more...)
Think outside the box!
Okay, having worked and lived in Silicon Valley, I really hate that term. I know what it means, but it ranks up with cliché’s such as “Don’t go there,” “Do you have the bandwidth,” “I’m so over it,” etc.
So I bring it up because there’s a debate going on as to what is better . . . buy organic? Buy local? Buy local organic? Organic is okay, even if it’s hauled from Peru or New Zealand? Free range? Cage free? Free range and cage free? (more...)
Green Botox? What?
Funny of the week: I went to a “Green” event last night, and was surprised at how good it was. People were friendly, there were folks from all walks of life, and people were normal. Even the vegans were nice. There was a table where one could put his brochures and business cards. And then there it was. I’ve seen it all.
Green Special. Botox! 15% off. 10% for maintenance shots.
Does that mean I have to pay the 5 cent CRV for the needle?
GayWashing
So yesterday we went to LA Pride in West Hollywood . . . walked around, and naturally my eyes gravitated to a bunch of tents that were pitching “green products.”

BioDegrading
I love Absolutely Fabulous, a British sitcom that has had a larger effect on current American TV than we realize. In one episode, Edina praises her latest client, disposable sunglasses called “PopSpecs.” Her daughter, Saffie, attacks the product for littering the planet, and Edina points out the “kind to trees” label. When Saffie asks, “How are they kind to trees,” the retort is: “Well they ain’t made of wood, how kind do you want?” (more...)
Follow up to my post on bottled water
Here’s a great article regarding the issue of bottled water in Canada. Thanks to a friend in Ottawa for passing it on.
At a very base level, why pay for something you’re already paying for???
Bottled Water: the enemy
I despise bottled water and avoid it whenever I can. Sometimes you can’t help it—you go to an event or friend’s house, you get offered a bottle, you don’t want to be rude—so I usually end up taking it with me to be sure it gets recycled—and judging by the fact that our recycling bin gets ransacked every Tuesday night, I’m pretty sure it does . . . and sometimes you need bottled water. Some areas of the world have horrific sanitation, and here in LA, we have huge bottles in our earthquake kit. (more...)
