Each day about 600 trucks from Amsterdam and 18 other cities drive up a huge ramp to the waste-to-fuel power plant, which lies in the western dockyards of this city of 750,000. The two incineration plants, built in 1993 and 2007, turn about 1.4 million tons of garbage into electricity.
Politicians love public works projects because it gives them a lasting legacy, and Amsterdam is no exception. The city leaders approved extending the underground metro to the city’s northern section, which currently is separated from the south by the Het Ij.
In Jordaan, my favorite neighborhood in Amsterdam, lies a corner store, Het Oud-Hollandsch Snoepwinkeltje. Twice I visited this charming little shop—I could never get enough. One visit and you are hooked on drop, Dutch licorice!
Yesterday I finally had to give back “The Black Stallion” to the shop from which I had rented the trusty bike for a week. I only had it a week, but it was like saying good-bye to an old pal.
