Parkman Triangle will no longer be closed off by caution tape.
Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti will be in attendance this Saturday, August 14, at 11:00 a.m. for the ribbon cutting ceremony that will officially open Silver Lake’s new “urban lounge!” Councilman Garcetti was a huge part of the project: his office contributed over $4000 which was used to demolish that old patch of asphalt that paved the way to creating a new green space for the district’s residents who live south of Sunset Boulevard.
It has been a long road for residents like David Davis, who had to constantly deal with weekend flea markets and the trash left behind—not to mention the constant litter, illegal parking, and heat that made this former turn lane onto Silver Lake Boulevard an eyesore.
Davis was among the many volunteers who spent many March and April weekends moving dirt, moving dirt, moving dirt . . . and then moving dirt again. Volunteers also dug irrigation trenches and planted the native plants, drought resistant grasses, succulents, and jacaranda trees that a few months later are already thriving.
Ara Babaian, who lives a block away, started organizing meetings over two years ago to see what could be done about this corner. He found out about the City’s Office of Community Beautification grants, and along the way he met local architect, John Southern, who fine-tuned the plans. Residents from as far away as Culver City resident Jason Anthony pitched in, and along with the Beautification Office’s grant, the Silver Lake Neighborhood council contributed funds that turned pavement into a canvas reflective of Southern California’s original landscape.
We hope to see you the morning of August 14 at 11:00 a.m.!
