In Seoul, Fall Colors Thrive in a Former Garbage Dump

When I lived in Korea, I would joke that I lived in Nanji-do, a huge landfill in northwest Seoul. It was no joke, however--the landfill collected trash for 15 years before it closed in the early 1990s and left a legacy of toxins, polluted groundwater and ruined soil.
But the local government eventually remediate Nanji-do and now this area is home to a 2002 World Cup Stadium as well as a series of parks. While walking through one of the many World Cup parks, I noticed the fall colors on the trees that would have seemed impossible twenty years ago. While I was too late to enjoy Korea’s fall colors this year, there still were a few remnants of Korea’s most stunning season. I took a few pictures before I returned to downtown Seoul. The maple and ginko leaves are by far the most stunning.
The park creates energy from methane gas, too.
