La Boca Shines With Painted Siding Chic
Some say it is dangerous, and porteños will tell tell you not to go at night, but in Buenos Aires, La Boca is always a spot I refuse to miss. This working-class enclave bellows what Argentina is all about: color, colorful people, colorful language, colorful sounds. Sure, it may have become “touristy,” but La Boca still sports its share of grit and passion. Its local football (soccer) team, Club Atlético Boca Juniors, rocks the Bombonera with shameless taunting of any opposing team that dares enter the neighborhood. The sounds of tango may be contrived, but are still comforting. I have made a point of visiting La Boca every time I have visited Buenos Aires, and the next time I travel to Argentina, I will walk along its proudly pastel-painted aluminum siding without apologies.
Plus any neighborhood with a history of rabble-rousing, including a declaration of independence from Argentina after a strike in the 1880s, is worth its weight in chutzpah.
