Kotor at Night is Adriatic Bliss

One of the best preserved medieval towns in southeastern Europe, Kotor is well worth a night or two if you travel through the Balkans and stop in Montenegro. About a three hour bus ride from Dubrovnik, the town offers amazing views from its surrounding fort. This old walled city along the Adriatic Coast is a highlight of this region.
But like the rest of the Balkans at night, Kotor’s maze-like streets and alleys should be enjoyed in the evening. Timeless historic sights like the Cathedral of Tryphon (or Kotor Cathedral) shine as they have for centuries. Squares including the one on which St. Nikola Church stares down offer quiet moments of reflection. And of course restaurants and pubs will offer you great local grub or a drink to warm the soul if you happen to visit the during the winter as I did last year. With all the hiking around Kotor’s sublime fjords, you will need the calories when you tackle them the following day.
Enjoy the pictures. Another trip to this corner of the world cannot come soon enough.
