LA’s second CicLAvia is this Sunday, April 10, from 10am to 3pm. The route starts in the “Hell-Mel” area of LA (Heliotrope and Melrose) and continues to downtown Los Angeles. Bicyclists, roller skaters, and of course, pedestrians are welcome to enjoy a few token streets free of cars.
The first CicLAvia was last October (see photo above left), and continues the tradition of Ciclovías that started 30 years ago in Bogota, Colombia. Congestion and pollution in crowded Colombia’s capital convinced leaders and activists to give its citizens a break, and now the tradition has spread throughout Latin America and even the United States. The idea to open the city streets--often our largest public spaces--is a great idea and brings folks of all backgrounds and socioeconomic levels out into the open, whether they are walking or bicycling.
I plan on traipsing through on my bike. Hopefully there will be good eats other than bacon-wrapped hot dogs!
To give an idea of what you are in for when biking in LA, here's a video from last October's CicLAvia by Will Campbell.
