Bicycling in Uruguay The Ticket to Enjoying South America

If you are going to bike across one country, make it Uruguay.  The country is about the size of Missouri, so a trip from one end to the other is not completely out of the question.  And once you are out of Uruguay, the country’s rural flavor is all yours.  Wineries, estancias, and farms stretch out as far as the eye can see.  Another highlight is the Atlantic coast.  Starting in Montevideo, long swathes of white sandy beaches, devoid of people, invite you to take a break from your journey--and if you go far enough, Punta del Diablo is your reward.  Then you have the roads--relatively easy enough to navigate, with small towns where you can recharge your batteries and see the real Uruguay.  We were not that ambitious during our last visit there, but a long bicycling tour is definitely on my to-do list.  Plus you can always take a break and ride a horse at an estancia.  Or just drink some tannat wine after a day of biking in Uruguay and enjoy the balmy summer evenings.

you may see more horses than bicyclists, actually
