Pucón is one of the most spectacular places to spend a vacation in South America and offers a great starting point from which to explore Patagonia. Its setting on Lake Villarica, with the eponymous volcano as a backdrop, is stunning, and the town’s center has several city blocks that are pleasant for walking around, dining and people watching. But one of the best ways to best ways to explore this gem of Chile, along with its surroundings, are on two wheels.

Cycle onto Camino Internacional, one of the town’s main drags, and you will not have far to go to explore the nearby Rio Pucón, Rio Plata, and wildlife reserve. There are opportunities to learn about the local Mapuche culture, picnic by a lake and surround yourself in the natural beauty that makes the Araucanía region a joy to visit. One trail, noted on most maps as local route S-919, offers an awesome afternoon of cycling, if you can handle the approximate 40 kilometers (25 miles) of going uphill and downhill. Stops such as the waterfalls at Ojo del Caburga make a day of bicycling in Pucón well worth the effort.

Plenty of bicycle rental shops are on O’Higgins, one of the main drags in town. But Freeride Pucón, a couple blocks from the best tour agency in Pucón, Summit Chile, has the best maintained bicycles in town, and their rates are reasonable. Located on Urrutia 484, their number as of press time is +56 45 244 1055. One of their bikes will help make your travel to Chile a fantastic experience.
