CDP & SRI Community Increase Pressure on Amazon on Carbon – Latest on The Guardian

Amazon has been a business lifeline for countless Americans and folks abroad. For those who live in remote areas, Amazon allows the purchase of goods and services at a price they can afford to which otherwise they would have no access. For students, e-books on Amazon’s Kindle help them deal with skyrocketing tuition. For me personally, Amazon is a time saver, whether I want to snag that latest book or buy a retractable leash for one of my critters.
But Amazon has its share of critics. Some are in Sacramento, over its reaction to Jerry Brown et all demand that Amazon charge its Golden State customers sales taxes. But to organizations like Calvert Investments and Carbon Disclosure Project, Amazon’s lack of transparency over its carbon output is controversial.
This just may be a case where Amazon is too big to listen. Part of the issue is American business law; part of it is that its courier services like UPS do much on the carbon front; and fair or not, if your shareholders do not pressure you, management will set the issue aside.
