Our 1000th Post: Where We’ve Been, Where We’ve Covered

May 25, 2011 3 Comments by
I thought it would be fun to sort out where GreenGoPost.com has been the past couple years.  I am lucky enough to have visited over 50 countries, and have had the opportunity to write about many more.  While lately I have experimented with shorter, more concise postings, most of my work is composed of longer, more thoughtful articles.  A handful are postings from sites like OBC and Eurasianet--whose reposting policies for which I am very thankful--but by far over 97% of the content on GreenGoPost.com is my original work.

So here is how the map chart works (click to expand, or scroll down below):

Grey:  Never visited nor sadly, never discussed.  I had a goal of covering all 200 countries and territories and that will take a while. Having never been to Africa, I admit I could know more about a region that is finally getting global attention--though more for its valuable commodities.

Yellow:  I have visited (year in parentheses), but apologies to Slovakia (1998), Belgium (2007), Brunei (1998) and the Philippines (1996)--I have not had the chance to write anything interesting about what is going on in those corners of the world.  Got ideas?  Please share them with me!

Red:  I have visited and have had the opportunity to write about them on either this site or Triple PunditBrazil by far is the winner (as this will be the Brazilian decade), with Bulgaria second and Korea (where I lived for 3 1/2 years) a close third.  The Balkans deserve more attention that what this exquisite corner deserves, so it has been a heavy area of discussion since my visit late last year--especially Serbia.  I am a big fan of both Argentina and Uruguay and would move to either in a heartbeat, but my coverage there has been lacking.

Orange:  I have never visited, but could not resist writing about events related to sustainability or culture in those places.  Random places include Djibouti and St. Lucia. Near misses include Laos (was going to go in 1998 but I got sick) and Albania (it was my plan last winter but flooding prevented me from entering--but I did have a great time in Kosovo, one of the most inspirational countries I have ever visited. Australia has been largely overlooked--disappointing on my behalf as it has dealt with drought and then flooding.

GreenGoPost.com has been around two years now, and working on it has been rewarding while opening up fantastic opportunities.  I would be remiss (forgive the Oscar-like speech, but I do live in LA)  if I did not mention some people who have been supportive beyond belief:  my unbelievable life partner, Ara Babaian (who thought up the name, a play on living in LA, in the first place); the brilliant Marcy Murninghan (by far my most endearing Twitter compatriot and soul sibling); her oft-partner in CSR analysis Bill Baue; the crew at 3BLMedia; Jaime Nack; Kat Shoa, Susan McPherson at Fenton; Crystal Crawford at GRI; former colleague Chanel Alexander; the staff at Guardian Sustainable Business and Triple Pundit; Jeannine Carlin Low, an old college friend whose 4-year-old is sometimes my literary muse; Stacy McCoy, and countless folks on Twitter led by Pascal Jappy and Frederic Page who have retweeted my work like fiends.

So where should I go next?  Or who will invite me?

Thank you everyone for your support!

I highly recommend Nepal. If I end up there in a couple of years maybe that will be the excuse you need to add it to your list! Honored to be included in your Oscar list. Oh the influences LA can have on a person.
